2.0 mm vs 3.2 mm solar glass: the working difference.

Thickness is the biggest single lever in a solar glass order. It moves weight, module construction, packing density and breakage behaviour all at once.

How to choose

  • Module construction decides first. Glass-backsheet designs typically carry 3.2 mm front glass; glass-glass designs pair two thin lites, commonly 2.0 mm.
  • Weight budgets matter downstream. Two 2.0 mm lites weigh roughly what one 3.2 mm lite plus backsheet does, but the module stiffness and mounting assumptions differ.
  • Packing and breakage move with thickness. Thinner glass ships more area per tonne but demands stricter edgework, interleave and crate design.
  • Other thicknesses exist, 2.5 mm and 4.0 mm and more, per supplier capability, confirmed at quotation rather than assumed.
