What a solar frame drawing must define.

A frame is not a catalogue item, every parameter follows the module design. This is the checklist a frame drawing has to answer before any serious quotation can come back.

1 · Profile geometry

Long-side and short-side profiles are usually different sections. The drawing must fix: profile height and width for each side, wall thicknesses, the glass-groove width and depth (matched to the laminate build-up), the mounting flange, and any internal ribs. If the module is glass-glass, say so, groove geometry and clamping assumptions change.

2 · Alloy & temper

6063-T5 is the common basis for module frames; 6063-T6 or 6005-T6 appear where the design asks for more strength. State the alloy and temper on the drawing, "aluminium" is not a specification, and temper changes both mechanical values and extrusion cost.

3 · Surface & anodising

Colour (silver, black, other), anodising film thickness with its tolerance, and the gloss/appearance requirement if any. If a protective film is required for handling, specify it, including where it must be removable without residue.

4 · Processing

Every hole, slot and punch with position and tolerance: mounting holes, grounding marks or holes, drainage holes and their positions, corner cut-outs. Grounding and drainage are the two most commonly under-specified items, and the two most annoying to discover missing on site.

5 · Corner keys

If the frame assembles with corner keys: key geometry or reference, material, fit requirement, and whether keys ship installed or separate. Corner strength expectations belong in writing, with the test basis stated.

6 · Tolerances & packing

Cut-length tolerance, angle tolerance at 45° or 90° ends, straightness. Then packing: interleave, bundle sizes, carton or pallet format, and labelling, the difference between profiles that arrive install-ready and profiles that arrive scratched.

The one-look checklist
  • Profile sections (long & short side) fully dimensioned, with wall thicknesses
  • Alloy & temper stated (e.g. 6063-T5 / T6 · 6005-T6 where specified)
  • Anodising colour + film thickness + tolerance · protective film if required
  • All holes & punches positioned, mounting, grounding, drainage
  • Corner-key geometry, material and fit · installed or separate
  • Cut-length & angle tolerances · packing and labelling requirements
